Understanding the Different Styles of Parenting

Parenting styles have long-term impacts on children. It is one of the strongest influences that determines one’s personality characteristics like emotional regulation, coping skills, adjustment, etc.

In recent times, there has been a distinction in the beliefs related to parenting. In fact, studies reveal that most parents now find parenting harder than it utilised to be in the past two decades.

However, a mindful parenting approach can assist parents in building solid relationships with their kids in any case. Additionally, a child’s personality & emotional health can both be enhanced with proper parenting techniques.

These parenting styles are various approaches in which parents guide & interact with their children. Let’s discuss each one of these along with the pros and cons of each type:

AUTHORITARIAN PARENTING STYLE

This style of parenting limits the child’s flexibility. Parents act as the only decision-makers. And there is barely any scope for open communication between them & the child. Most of the time, parents set their rules & expect their children to obey without any scope of discussion. Parents who take up this style end up growing kids who struggle in making decisions, have higher levels of charge, lack emotional regulation & have poor self-esteem.

AUTHORITATIVE PARENTING STYLE

Parents who adopt an authoritarian parenting style encourage independence & nurture their kids with set goals & provide adequate support to achieve these. This style promotes academic accomplishments and improves the child’s self-regulation skills. Children presented with this style often grow up to be adults with good emotional health. And they also develop a definition of independence over a period of time.

  1. PERMISSIVE PARENTING STYLE

As the name suggests, this parenting style delivers an environment of warmth & care to the child. Parents behave more like friends and share a lot of freedom to the child. In most cases, this style makes children more capricious and obstinate. They also tend to develop unhealthy habits such as extreme eating, and irregular sleep patterns.

  1. UNINVOLVED PARENTING STYLE

The term uninvolved itself is self-explanatory as these parents do not mind the child well. Uninvolved parents are not interested much in all that goes on in their child’s lives. They do not create schedules & allow more freedom to the child by failing their duties. Children raised by clear parents often become more self-sufficient in life. At the same time, they might face issues in handling their emotions as they do not get a nurturing environment to create good emotional intelligence.

FINAL THOUGHTS

There is no ideal or bookish way of bringing up a child. In fact, good parenting is a product of saving the right amount of time and supporting the child to grow up as a healthy individual. We beautifully define parenting as the behaviors, interactions, emotions, knowledge, perspectives, beliefs, and practices that are associated with promoting care. So let’s trust ourselves & select an appropriate parenting style, to help our children develop up as well-rounded people.
